About ÖBB
ÖBB (Österreichische Bundesbahnen) is Austria's national railway, operating both high-speed daytime services and Europe's largest overnight train network. The Railjet fleet connects Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Munich, Zurich, Budapest, Prague, and Venice at speeds up to 230 km/h. The Nightjet brand operates sleeper trains to over 25 European cities including Amsterdam, Hamburg, Rome, and Brussels, with new-generation trains featuring innovative Mini Cabin sleeping pods.
Railjet trains offer three travel classes — a rarity in European rail. Economy class provides comfortable 2+2 seating with free WiFi and a family zone with children's entertainment. First class upgrades to 2+1 leather seating with at-seat meal service and ÖBB Lounge access. Business class, available for a small supplement, offers fully-reclining cradle seats in semi-private compartments with a complimentary welcome drink.
The Nightjet sleeper service provides accommodation ranging from reclining seats to deluxe sleeping compartments with en suite shower and toilet. The new generation Nightjet trains, entering service since December 2023, introduce the Mini Cabin — a private sleeping pod for solo travellers — alongside modernised couchettes and sleeper compartments. Breakfast is included with all sleeper and couchette fares. ÖBB Lounge access is complimentary for sleeper ticket holders at Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck.
ÖBB Railjet and Nightjet tickets are available on EuroTrain. Search any ÖBB city pair — such as Vienna → Zurich, Munich → Venice, or Vienna → Amsterdam — to find both daytime Railjet and overnight Nightjet departures, making it easy to compare journey times, fares, and comfort levels.

Booking Tips
How to Search on EuroTrain
Search any ÖBB city pair on EuroTrain — Vienna → Zurich, Munich → Venice, or Vienna → Amsterdam. Both daytime Railjet and overnight Nightjet departures appear in results. Evening departures with next-morning arrivals are Nightjet services.
Three Travel Classes on Railjet
ÖBB Railjet is one of the few European trains offering three classes. Economy has 2+2 seating. First class has 2+1 leather seats with at-seat meal service. Business class offers fully-reclining cradle seats for just €15-20 more than First — a unique upgrade worth considering for longer journeys.
Nightjet: Save a Hotel Night
Nightjet sleeper trains depart in the evening and arrive the next morning. You save the cost of a hotel and a full day of travel. Breakfast is included with all couchette and sleeper fares — wake up to a Viennese breakfast of tea, coffee, and fresh rolls.
ÖBB Lounge Access
First class and Business class Railjet passengers can access ÖBB Lounges at 7 Austrian stations (Vienna Hbf, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Linz, Graz, Klagenfurt, Vienna Meidling). Nightjet sleeper ticket holders get lounge access at Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbruck — complimentary tea, coffee, beer, snacks, and WiFi.
Children Under 15 Travel Free
Children under 6 always travel free. Children aged 6-14 travel at half price. On oebb.at Sparschiene bookings, children under 15 travel free when added to an adult booking — a notable saving for families.
New Generation Nightjet: Try the Mini Cabin
The new Nightjet trains (in service since December 2023) feature Mini Cabins — private sleeping pods for solo travellers with a 190cm bed, locker, and breakfast included. Currently available on routes including Hamburg–Vienna/Innsbruck and Zurich–Hamburg, expanding throughout 2026.
Seat Reservation Optional on Railjet
Unlike many European high-speed trains, Railjet seat reservation is optional. Trains cannot sell out — you can always board with a valid ticket. However, reserving a specific seat (including quiet zone or family zone) costs a small fee and is recommended during peak travel times.
Book Up to 6 Months Ahead
ÖBB opens bookings up to 6 months (180 days) in advance. Sparschiene advance-purchase fares are the cheapest and sell out first. Nightjet sleeper and couchette fares also increase as trains fill up. Book early for the best prices and your preferred accommodation type.
Greener Than Flying
ÖBB rail operations run on 100% renewable electricity. A Vienna–Amsterdam journey by Nightjet produces a fraction of the CO2 of a comparable flight, and you arrive in the city centre — not at a remote airport.
