Streckenübersicht: Barcelona nach Madrid

Barcelona to Madrid is Spain’s busiest high-speed rail corridor and Europe’s only route served by three competing operators — Renfe AVE, IRYO, and OUIGO Spain. With over 35 direct trains daily and fares from €9, the 621-kilometre journey takes as little as 2 hours 30 minutes at speeds up to 300 km/h. Since competition arrived in 2021, prices have dropped significantly, making this one of Europe’s best-value high-speed routes.

All three operators depart from Barcelona Sants and arrive at Madrid-Puerta de Atocha. Renfe’s AVE is the flagship service with the highest frequency, offering both Estándar and Confort classes with complimentary WiFi and a café-bar. IRYO operates Frecciarossa 1000 trains with four distinct classes, including the premium Infinita Bistró with at-seat dining. OUIGO Spain provides a budget-friendly option on double-decker TGV trains from just €9, though baggage limits are stricter.

The high-speed line runs via Zaragoza, connecting Spain’s two largest cities centre to centre. Trains have captured 85% of the travel market on this route, making flying between Barcelona and Madrid largely redundant. All Renfe and IRYO tickets include free Cercanías suburban rail transfers at both ends of the journey.

Wissenswertes über Züge von Barcelona nach Madrid

Three Operators, One Route — Compare Before You Book

Barcelona to Madrid is served by Renfe AVE, IRYO, and OUIGO Spain — all running on the same high-speed track. Renfe offers the most frequencies (20+ daily), IRYO provides the newest trains (Frecciarossa 1000), and OUIGO has the lowest starting fares (from €9). Comparing all three on a single platform ensures you find the best combination of price, schedule, and comfort class.

Free Cercanías Transfer Included with Your Ticket

Renfe AVE and IRYO tickets include Combinado Cercanías — a free suburban rail transfer at both Barcelona and Madrid. In Barcelona, this lets you reach El Prat Airport via Rodalies R2 Nord (approximately 19 minutes). In Madrid, you can connect from Atocha to Chamartín station or to Madrid Barajas Airport Terminal 4 via Cercanías line C1 (approximately 25 minutes). Use the QR code on your ticket at the suburban station turnstiles.

Baggage Rules Vary by Operator — Check Before Boarding

Renfe AVE has no strict luggage limits — bring what you can carry, as on any European train. IRYO includes one personal item and one cabin bag for Inicial fares; larger bags require Inicial Superior or higher. OUIGO Spain has the strictest policy: one handbag (27×36×15 cm) and one cabin bag (55×35×25 cm) included, suitcases cost €5 if added online beforehand, with a €40 surcharge if caught at boarding. All operators have baggage X-ray screening at Spanish stations.

Barcelona Sants — Connected to the City and the Airport

Barcelona Sants is the city’s main high-speed station, located in the Sants-Montjuïc district. It is connected to the metro (Lines L3 and L5), suburban Rodalies trains, and buses. El Prat Airport is reachable via Rodalies line R2 Nord in approximately 19 minutes. The station has shops, restaurants, and a large departure hall. Arrive at least 15 minutes before departure to clear security screening.

Non-Stop vs Stopping Services — 30 Minutes Difference

Non-stop trains complete the journey in 2 hours 30 minutes, while services stopping at Camp de Tarragona, Lleida, or Zaragoza take approximately 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes. Most IRYO trains stop only at Zaragoza-Delicias (the midpoint), adding around 10 minutes. If time is critical, filter for non-stop departures.

Spain Has Airport-Style Security at HSR Stations

Unlike most European countries, Spanish high-speed stations require baggage X-ray screening before boarding. There are no metal detectors — it takes only a few minutes and is nothing like an airport. Your ticket is also checked before you reach the platform. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before departure (30 minutes for OUIGO, which closes boarding 5 minutes before departure).

Häufig gestellte Fragen: Barcelona–Madrid

The fastest non-stop high-speed trains take 2 hours 30 minutes. Services with one or two stops take approximately 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours 10 minutes. The average journey time across all operators is around 2 hours 42 minutes.

Fares start from €9 on OUIGO Spain, from €15 on IRYO, and from €17 on Renfe AVE when booked in advance. Prices increase closer to departure, with walk-up fares reaching €90 or more. Advance booking is recommended for the best prices.

Renfe AVE offers the highest frequency and two comfort classes. IRYO runs the newest trains (Frecciarossa 1000) with four classes including premium dining. OUIGO Spain is the budget option from €9 but has strict baggage limits and fewer departures. All use the same track and take the same time.

All three operators depart from Barcelona Sants and arrive at Madrid-Puerta de Atocha. Both stations have metro, suburban rail, and bus connections. Cercanías transfers to airports are included free with Renfe AVE and IRYO tickets.

Barcelona El Prat Airport Terminal 2 is connected via Rodalies suburban train line R2 Nord, taking approximately 19 minutes from Sants. For Terminal 1, take the free shuttle bus from Terminal 2. Renfe AVE and IRYO tickets include a free Rodalies transfer (Combinado Cercanías).

This is a domestic Spanish route, so no passport is required. However, Spanish rail operators require a valid ID document with photograph — a national ID card, driving licence, or passport — as identity checks may occur during boarding or on the train.

Renfe AVE has no strict luggage limits. IRYO allows one personal item and one cabin bag in Inicial class, with larger suitcases available in higher fare classes. OUIGO allows one handbag and one cabin bag — suitcases cost €5 if pre-booked online or €40 at the station.
