Continental Eurostar — No Check-In Required
Unlike Channel Eurostar trains to London (blue trains with passport control and security), Continental Eurostar services (red trains, formerly Thalys) require no check-in, no security screening, and no passport control. Simply walk to the platform and board. This route is entirely within the Schengen Area.
Formerly Thalys — Same Route, New Brand
Thalys merged with Eurostar in October 2023. The red TGV PBKA trains and routes remain identical. Class names were updated in November 2024: Comfort 1/2/Premium became Standard/Plus/Premier. If you see old “Thalys” references online, they refer to the same service.
Three Countries, One Ticket
This train crosses France, Belgium, and Germany on a single ticket. All three are in the Schengen Area, so there are no border stops or passport checks during the journey.
Liège Guillemins — Architectural Masterpiece
The train stops at Liège Guillemins, designed by Santiago Calatrava. Its soaring glass and steel canopy is considered one of the world’s most beautiful railway stations. Worth a stopover.
Cologne Cathedral at the Station

HSL 3 — High-Speed Through Belgium
The high-speed line HSL 3 between Liège and Aachen, opened in December 2009, shortened the journey by 19 minutes. Trains reach 260 km/h on this section.
